50 million-year-old fossil stolen from international trade fair, police nabs thief

A man from Noida in Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for stealing a five-crore-year-old fossil from a Geological Survey of India (GSI) stall. In fact, GSI also set up a stall at the India International Trade Fair 2024 in the capital Delhi. A five crore year old ‘gastropod fossil’ was kept at the Geological Survey of India stall here, which was stolen. After this the police investigated and arrested the accused.

According to the police, the theft of relics took place on November 21 in hall number four of the ministry’s ‘Mines Pavilion’. Stolen ‘gastropod fossils’ are preserved remains of ancient snails. For information, let us tell you that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) was established in 1851 as an organization of the Government of India under the Ministry of Mines. The institute is also India’s leading provider of basic earth science information to government, industry and the general public.

In this way the accused was caught

Delhi Police has informed about this incident on Tuesday. Police said in a statement that more than 100 CCTV footages of the incident site and surrounding stalls, pavilions and halls were examined to identify those accused of stealing the 50-million-year-old fossil. After this the accused was identified and then with the help of information the police team conducted a raid and arrested the accused in Sector 22, Noida. The accused has been identified as 49-year-old Manoj Kumar Mishra.

A fossil was recovered from the accused

When questioned by the police, the accused Manoj Kumar Mishra confessed to the theft. The police have also recovered the stolen gastropod fossil from the accused. The accused is an employee of a five star hotel in Noida. The accused has a keen interest in various forms of art and therefore keeps visiting fairs. (input language)
