The investigation follows a BBC documentary broadcast in September which detailed allegations of rape and sexual assault against the former owner of Harrods. According to police, more than 400 women and witnesses have come forward to accuse the billionaire of sexual misconduct since the documentary was released.
Police said “numerous victims, some reporting multiple offences,” came forward following the new public appeal. A special police unit will review all reports and investigate all leads, they added.
Authorities are also investigating individuals linked to al-Fayed to determine their role in any potential crimes. Additionally, they are reviewing past investigations for missed opportunities. Over 50,000 pages of evidence, including victim statements, have been examined.
“This investigation is about giving a voice to survivors, given the fact that Mohammed al-Fayed is no longer alive to face prosecution,” said Met Specialist Crime Command Commander Stephen Clayman.
“However, we are now pursuing any individuals suspected of being involved in his crime, and we are committed to seeking justice.”
Clayman also acknowledged that “past incidents may have affected the public’s trust and confidence in our approach” but stressed that police are “determined to rebuild that trust by addressing these allegations with honesty and thoroughness.”
Earlier, police confirmed the identities of 60 potential victims.
The police force has referred itself to a UK police watchdog following complaints about its handling of an earlier investigation into alleged sexual abuse of al-Fayed. Al-Fayed’s late brothers Salah and Ali have also been charged.
Mohammed Al-Fayed died in August 2023 at the age of 94.

90 victims have been identified in new sexual assault claims against the late billionaire Mohammed al-Fayed, London police say.
