As problems mount for South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, the opposition presents an impeachment motion in parliament

Seoul: South Korea’s opposition parties have tabled an impeachment motion in parliament against President Eun Suk-yeol over the imposition of martial law. Earlier on Wednesday, South Korea’s main opposition party called on President Yoon Suk-yeol to step down or face impeachment. On Tuesday night, the UN suddenly imposed martial law in the country. Martial law imposed by the President remained in effect for only six hours, as the National Assembly voted to reject the President’s decision.

What did the Democratic Party say?

“President Yun Suk-yeol’s declaration of martial law is a violation of the constitution,” the Democratic Party said in a statement. His declaration of martial law is fundamentally invalid and a grave violation of the Constitution, the statement said. This was a serious act of rebellion and provided full grounds for his impeachment.

The ruling and opposition parties protested

Ever since martial law was imposed in the country, the ruling party and the opposition have turned against it. Many ruling party leaders also called it undemocratic and unconstitutional. At the same time, the leader of the president’s own party, Han Dong-hoon, also openly criticized the decision and participated in the vote in parliament. After the martial law decision, large-scale protests started across the country.
