The government is strict about scams through WhatsApp. MeitY has directed WhatsApp’s parent company Meta to take strict action to prevent this. Recently, I4C, the cyber security wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs, banned over 59,000 WhatsApp accounts related to digital fraud. The government has given this information in Parliament during the current winter session. In its notice, the government has sought a response from social media apps Facebook, Instagram and Meta platform WhatsApp.
Preparing to stop digital fraud
According to the report, the government has informed Meta about the ever-increasing digital fraud. Hackers are constantly adopting new methods, which has become a challenge for the agency. WhatsApp is the most used app not only in India but all over the world. This app has 295 crore daily active users worldwide. This is a good resource for hackers in such situations.
Hackers can easily share fake posts through WhatsApp. Innocent people fall into the traps laid by hackers and lose everything. TRAI has implemented new rules from October 1 to curb fake SMS and calls. After the implementation of this rule, messages containing fake links will not be sent to mobile phones through SMS.
TRAI has instructed to prepare the framework
If a fake or fake message is sent on WhatsApp, there is a procedure for it. Users can report that content. MeitY said that TRAI has been asked to prepare a framework to regulate calls made through WhatsApp. Scammers are scamming people using internet calls i.e. VoIP. Many such incidents have come to light in recent times.
