Ahead of Australia Open 2025, there is a big good news for Indian tennis fans. Organizers of the Australian Open released the main draw list for 2025 on Friday. In which top 50 ranked players in ATP and WTA rankings have been signed up. The main draw will begin on January 12 and the final will be played on January 26. Now, on a happier note for India, Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal is all set to make his fifth Grand Slam appearance after securing direct entry into the main draw of next year’s Australian Open.
Did a great feat last season
Sumit Nagal’s world ranking is currently 98. He has been given direct entry into the men’s singles main draw. Sumit Nagal participated in four Grand Slams in 2024 and reached his best ranking of 68. After reaching the main round from the qualifying stage of the Australian Open last season, he defeated 31st seed Aleksandr Bublik of Kazakhstan in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (5) in his opening match. He then became the first Indian player in 34 years to defeat a seeded player in the main draw of a Grand Slam.
Djokovic’s name is also included in this list
On the other hand, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic has been seeded 7th in men’s singles after a disappointing 2024 season. Djokovic completed his tennis journey by winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, but failed to win a single ATP title this year. Meanwhile, fan favorite Australian Nick Kyrgios is set to make a comeback after missing the last two seasons due to a knee injury. 2022 Wimbledon finalists are granted direct entry under the secured rankings.
