‘Great War’ breaks out over ‘martial law’ in South Korea, now President Yoon apologizes

Seoul: South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol apologized on Saturday for causing public concern over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law in the country earlier this week. South Korean lawmakers will vote on Saturday to impeach President Yoon for trying to impose martial law. Protests are growing across the country demanding the removal of UN.

What did President Yoon say in his address?

President Yun Suk-yeol said in a brief televised address on Saturday morning that he would not shirk legal or political responsibility for attempting to impose martial law and vowed not to make further attempts to impose it. He said he would leave it to his political party to deal with the political upheaval in the country, including “matters related to my tenure”.

Surrounded by his own party

Currently, it is unclear whether a proposal put forward by opposition lawmakers will gain the two-thirds majority needed to impeach Yun, but leaders of Yun’s own party have called for his constitutional powers to be suspended from office. Such action may take further steps, including retrying the imposition. Since then, the chances of the impeachment motion getting a majority have increased. To impeach Yun, the support of 200 of the 300 members of the National Assembly would be needed. The opposition forces that jointly moved the impeachment motion have a total of 192 seats.

What happened in South Korea?

President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the imposition of ’emergency martial law’ in the country on Tuesday. He accused the opposition of dominating parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and destabilizing the government with anti-national activities. Hours later, parliament voted to repeal the declaration, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that lawmakers “will protect democracy together with the people.”
