Nadeem Aslam Chaudhary, chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in a tribal area in northwest Pakistan on Thursday. Chaudhary said a woman and a child were among those killed in the attack in Kurram tribal district. “This is a major tragedy and the death toll is likely to rise,” he said.

Tensions between Shia and Sunni Muslims have been simmering for decades over land disputes in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. No group claimed responsibility for the incident. According to the information, “There were two convoys of passenger vehicles, one carrying passengers from Peshawar to Parachinar and the other from Parachinar to Peshawar, when armed men opened fire on them.” Chowdhury said his relatives were traveling in a caravan from Peshawar.
