American MP’s Statement, Says ‘Safety of Hindus in Bangladesh is Interim Government’s Responsibility’

Washington: Amid attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, the US has spoken of respecting fundamental freedoms, including religious and fundamental human rights. India continues to express concern over attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh. “We are clear that fundamental freedoms must be respected,” US State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters. “Governments must respect the rule of law, they must respect basic human rights,” Patel said.

‘Protests must be peaceful’

Vedant Patel said that any form of protest should be peaceful. “We emphasize that the detained people should also get proper representation and be treated according to basic fundamental freedoms and human rights,” Patel said in response to a question.

Meanwhile, US Congressman Brad Sherman said in a statement, “The interim government of Bangladesh has the sole responsibility to protect the Hindu minority and the administration must play a role in responding meaningfully to the recent attacks and atrocities against thousands of minority Hindus.” to end violence against the Hindu community,” Sherman said.
