In Srinagar, traffic authorities have launched a unique initiative aimed at enhancing road safety for children traveling with their parents.
The move highlights the growing concern over the safety of young commuters, especially given the high risks they face in the event of road accidents.
“The distribution of helmets is part of a comprehensive strategy to promote awareness about the importance of wearing helmets and ensure that all commuters, especially children, stay safe during their journey,” a traffic cop told NVI at Maulana Azad Road Srinagar.
He said that by providing helmets free, the traffic police makes it easier for parents to follow safety rules without financial burden, which is especially important for low-income families.
Apart from helmet distribution, the traffic police in Srinagar have been vocal about their approach to enforcing traffic laws pertaining to non-Jammu and Kashmir (JK) registered vehicles.
In a statement, the traffic department clarified that they will not indiscriminately impound vehicles registered outside the region. Instead, vehicles from other states will be impounded only if their drivers are found to be habitual criminals or if they repeatedly violate traffic laws. The policy shows a more lenient approach to non-local and local drivers who operate J&K non-registered vehicles.
“The decision to target habitual offenders instead of non-local vehicles in general shows a shift towards more measured enforcement,” said Imtiaz Ahmed, another traffic cop. It also addresses public and visitor concerns regarding the inconvenience and potential difficulties faced by out-of-state drivers.
Today’s gesture by the Srinagar Traffic Police shows a balanced approach to promote safety and fairness, a move widely welcomed by parents.
