Washington: An Indian-American lawmaker has called for visa bans and asset freezes for senior Pakistani officials following reports of an alleged attempt to cover up killings of peaceful protesters in Pakistan. Let us tell you that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party took out a protest march towards Islamabad demanding the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and four people were allegedly killed in the action taken by the authorities against this march. 50 people were killed and injured. But the PTI claimed hundreds of deaths during this period.
Now Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna said, “The administration of Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir should ban the visas of senior officials and freeze their assets.” .” MP Mickey Sherrill said he was deeply concerned by reports of violence in response to protests in Pakistan. “The people of Pakistan are entitled to a vibrant democracy, which includes the right to freedom of speech and expression,” he said.
Human rights have also been violated in Pakistan
Pakistan is also accused of human rights violations. So last month MP Greg Kaiser, along with 60 other MPs, wrote a letter to US President Joe Biden supporting human rights and democracy in Pakistan and calling for the release of political prisoners, including Khan. The Carter Center, an NGO founded by former US President Jimmy Carter, expressed concern over this week’s violence in Islamabad in a statement. The organization works on topics such as conflict resolution, democracy and human rights, disease and mental health care. (language)
