Beirut: The Israeli military said Thursday that its warplanes bombed southern Lebanon after detecting Hezbollah activity at a rocket storage facility. This is the first Israeli airstrike a day after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect. There was no immediate information on casualties in the Israeli airstrikes. Israel said Hezbollah violated the ceasefire agreement, but gave no details.
What will happen to the ceasefire agreement?
Lebanon’s official National News Agency said two people were wounded in the attack. A series of events has raised concerns about the agreement brokered by the US and France, including an initial two-month ceasefire. Under this, Hezbollah fighters are to withdraw north of the Litani River and Israeli forces are to withdraw to the side of the border. The buffer zone will be patrolled by Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers.

A gunshot was heard
Lebanon’s state news agency reported that Israeli gunfire targeted civilians in the Merkabah near the border, but did not provide further details. An Associated Press reporter in northern Israel near the border heard Israeli drones flying overhead and shots being fired from the Lebanese side. Israeli officials have said that the withdrawal of troops will be gradual once the agreement is implemented.
Israel’s right to attack
Israel has warned people not to return to areas where soldiers are stationed. It has said it has the right to attack Hezbollah if it violates the terms of the ceasefire. A Lebanese military official said Lebanese troops would gradually deploy to the south as Israeli forces retreated. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to release information to the media. (AP)
