The Indian team won the T20 series against South Africa 3-1 under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma and Varun Chakraborty have been brilliant for India in the T20 series. Team India was able to win the series only because of these players. Tilak scored a total of 280 runs in the series including two centuries and was awarded the player of the series. India won the fourth T20 match by 135 runs. In this match, South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee protested the umpire’s decision. After which now ICC has taken action against him.
Gerald Coetzee admits his mistake
Gerald Coetzee was reprimanded for protesting an umpire’s decision in a T20 international. He made inappropriate comments after one of his balls was declared ‘wide’ by the umpire. An ICC press release stated that Gerald Coetzee was found guilty of breaching Rule 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, which relates to protesting an umpire’s decision during a T20 international match. A demerit point was added to his disciplinary record. He accepted the crime and the punishment so no formal trial was required.
A ban is imposed if four demerit points are received within 24 months
The minimum penalty for a level one violation is an official reprimand while the maximum penalty is 50 percent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points added to his account. When a player reaches four or more demerit points in a 24-month period it is converted into suspension points and the player is banned.
Gerald Coetzee did not perform well in the T20 series against India. He took only four wickets in four T20 matches. So far he has taken 12 wickets in 10 T20 Internationals for South Africa. He has 10 wickets in Tests and 31 wickets in ODIs.
