Another Islamic country in India’s neighborhood? A proposal to remove the word ‘secular’ from the constitution of Bangladesh

After the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government, fundamentalism is gaining ground in Bangladesh. The head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, is taking one decision after another which is against the original spirit of Bangladesh when it was founded. Along with this, Bangladesh is also likely to declare itself as an Islamic country. Bangladesh’s top law official has proposed removing the words secular and socialist from the country’s constitution.

Demand to remove these matters from the constitution

Bangladesh Attorney General Mohammad Asazman has made several arguments in the court during the hearing on a writ petition. The Attorney General has demanded the removal of two of the four principles of Bangladesh’s constitution namely secularism and socialism. Along with this, it has also been demanded to abolish the status of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the father of the nation. Apart from this, provision of capital punishment was demanded for changing the government by extra-constitutional means.

Challenge the validity of the constitutional amendment

A writ petition filed in a Bangladesh court has challenged the validity of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution passed in 2011 by the then Sheikh Hasina government. The reforms included restoring secularism, abolishing the system of interim government to oversee elections, assuming power through extra-constitutional means, and giving Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the status of Father of the Nation. It has been argued in court that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the leader of Bangladesh. However, the Awami League Party has politicized him in its own interest.

The court sought a reply from the interim government

A two-judge bench of the High Court of Bangladesh has issued a rule asking the government of Mohammad Yunus to clarify its stand on the matter. Let us tell you that Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government was overthrown in Bangladesh on August 5 amid student demonstrations and large-scale violence. (input language)
