Arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das

Dhaka: Leaders of minority religious groups in Bangladesh have told the interim government’s chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, that the bail plea of Hindu monk Chinmay Krishna Das should be considered. A bail hearing for the monk facing sedition charges has been rescheduled for January 2.
“Bail is the right of all persons,” Father Albert Rosario of St. Mary’s Cathedral said Thursday after attending a dialogue hosted by Yunus with leaders of major religions. Noted Bangladeshi writer Farhad Mazhar also stressed the importance of Das’ right to bail.
At the meeting, Sukomal Barua, chief adviser of the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation, proposed organizing an international conference to demonstrate the nation’s commitment to peace and unity. Avinash Mitra, assistant secretary (religion) of Ram’s Harichand temple, said the Hindu community raised their grievances and Yunus listened patiently.
Meanwhile, a Chittagong court on Friday remanded Chandan Das and Ripan Das in connection with the killing of Saiful Islam Alif, who died in an encounter after a city court denied bail to Chinmay Das.
