Boat full of tourists sinks in Red Sea, 16 missing; 28 people were rescued

Cairo: At least 16 people are missing after a tourist boat capsizes in the Red Sea. Egyptian officials have given information about this. Red Sea region governor Amar Hanafi said rescuers rescued 28 people from boats south of the coastal city of Marsa Alam and some were airlifted for treatment. According to information provided by the Red Sea Governorate on Facebook, Hanafi visited the site where the boat sank.

People from many countries were on board the boat

Hanafi said a total of 44 people were on board the boat, including 13 Egyptians and crew members. 31 foreign nationals from America, Germany, Britain, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, China, Slovakia, Spain and Ireland were on board the boat.

The boat was hit by a big wave

According to officials, the boat named ‘Sea Story’ had no technical problems and had obtained all necessary permits before the voyage. It was last inspected in March for navigational safety. Initial reports based on statements from the boat’s crew and tourists said that a large wave hit the boat, causing it to capsize. The boat left Marsa Alam on a five-day journey.

It is not yet clear why the boat sank. According to its manufacturer’s website, the yacht was built in 2022 and can accommodate 36 passengers. The Egyptian army is coordinating rescue operations with the governorate. Many tour companies have stopped or limited travel to the Red Sea due to fears of conflict in the region. (AP)
