India tops the world’s top 10 countries in downloading fake apps. According to McAfee’s report, millions of people downloaded fake loan apps on their smartphones in the third quarter of the year. These apps steal your personal and bank details and send them to hackers, making you a victim of major fraud. The security research company said it has found 15 such fake apps, which have been downloaded by millions of people. If you have these 15 fake loan apps on your phone, delete them immediately, or else you could be in for a big scam.

These 15 fake loan apps have been spotted on the Google Play Store, due to which millions of Android users are currently being targeted by hackers. McAfee’s research team has seen these apps on the Play Store. About 8 million i.e. 80 lakh users have downloaded these apps. The security research firm shared information about these apps with Google. Many of these apps have been removed from the Google Play Store as of this writing. However, these apps will still be installed on the phones of millions of users. In such a situation, they need to be uninstalled immediately.

Why is it dangerous?

These fake loan apps are dangerous because when installed in users’ phones, they ask for many types of permissions, including phone, calls, messages, camera, microphone, location, etc. In the compulsion to take a loan, users give all the permissions to these apps in their phones, after which the user’s data is stolen. The security firm says these apps are based on a common framework and code, which allows them to steal OTPs, or one-time passwords, from a user’s phone.

Apart from this, these apps are designed in such a way that they can bypass Google’s security. This is the reason why even though Google Play is protected, they are listed on the Play Store. Many users have also complained about these apps on the Google Play Store. Through these apps, hackers are threatening users by stealing photos from their smartphones and also altering them.
