Washington: Newly elected US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump proposed the ceasefire after meeting with French and Ukrainian leaders in the French capital Paris and claimed in a social media post that Kiev wanted a deal to end the more than 1,000-day war. Russian President Kremlin has said it is open to talks, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said any agreement paves the way for lasting peace.
‘Families are being destroyed’
Trump claimed in a post on his Truth social platform that both Russia and Ukraine have lost thousands of soldiers in a war that should never have started. “There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin,” he said. Many people are losing their lives needlessly, many families are being destroyed.” He called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. Trump’s comments came after meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

What did Zelensky say?
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called the meeting constructive. He told reporters that any peace deal must be fair to the people of Ukraine. “When we talk about effective peace with Russia, we must first talk about effective peace guarantees,” Zelensky said. The people of Ukraine want peace.” He claimed that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 370,000 others injured since Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022. (AP)
