Thrissur: A tragic road accident took place in the district on Tuesday morning. Here a truck rammed into a roadside tent. Many people were sleeping inside the tents, which were run over by the truck. At least five people, including two children who were sleeping there, were killed in the accident, while six people were said to be injured.
People slept in tents
Police said the nomads were sleeping on the side of the national highway at Natika under Valpad police station area. All these people had built a tent and were sleeping inside it. Meanwhile, a truck crushed him at 4.30 am. According to the police, those killed include two children aged one-and-a-half years and four years and two women.
The driver and the attendant were drunk
According to the police, the truck was bringing firewood from Kannur. During the accident, the truck was being driven by a helper who did not even have a license. Both were drunk at the time of the accident. He said that both have been taken into custody.
A case of culpable homicide was registered
After the incident, Thrissur City Police Commissioner R Ilango reached the spot and inspected the spot. He said that a case of culpable homicide has been registered under the non-bailable provision of BNS. The police commissioner said that the offense carries a 10-year jail term.
Caught by local people
Another official said that according to locals, the vehicle was speeding and the driver and passenger tried to flee after the accident. “Locals nabbed the duo and handed them over to the police,” the official said.
Treatment of the injured is ongoing
District Magistrate Arjun Pandian also went to the spot. He said that all the injured are undergoing treatment at Thrissur Medical College. The condition of two of the injured is critical. He said that the bodies will be handed over to their families after post-mortem. “A detailed report has been sought from the police,” he said.
The accident will be investigated
When the state revenue minister K. Rajan said that a detailed report has been sought from the police and the district magistrate. Terming the incident as unfortunate, he said that according to the preliminary investigation by the police, the driver and the passenger have committed serious mistakes. He said an inquiry would also be conducted into the circumstances under which the victims were forced to sleep on the roadside. (Input- Agency)
