‘Expect our relations with India to be based on fairness’: Bangladesh ahead of FS Misri visit

Bangladesh said on Sunday that it is optimistic that its relations with India will improve as Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri prepares to visit the country on Monday. Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, said Dhaka hoped for “improved relations” with New Delhi, but he expected relations to be based on “fairness”.
“We really hope that our relations with India will improve further. We have said earlier that we have linguistic, historical and cultural ties with India. In this regard, we certainly want better relations with India so that the people of both countries can benefit. At the same time, we want our relations with India to be based on fairness, equality and dignity,” the press secretary to Bangladesh’s chief counsel said in response to questions about the visit. Misri’s visit comes amid rising tensions in the region, including violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and attacks on religious minorities. India has expressed concern over the situation, particularly following incidents involving Hindu temples and the arrest of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated that Bangladesh’s interim government should ensure protection of all minorities.
On the Bangladeshi side, officials are ready to address their own concerns during the visit, including: Extradition of Sheikh Hasina and treatment of minorities in India. Strained relations have also been marked by protests in India over atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, further complicating diplomatic dialogue.
Adviser on Foreign Affairs Mohammad Tauhid Hussain expressed confidence that the visit would help resolve the recent impasse. “We expect that we will be able to overcome this impasse,” Hussain said. He emphasized the importance of mutual communication and hoped that the discussions would lead to positive results. This will be the first high-level visit from India after the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh.
“We want to bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country and prosecute her… She is the main commander who killed more than 1,500 people in July-August. Earlier, she was the head of the government when people were subjected to enforced disappearance,” he said.
During the visit to Egypt, key issues such as border management, water-sharing agreements and trade relations are expected to be discussed. Bangladesh emphasized the importance of addressing these bilateral issues for the future prosperity of both countries.
