Justice Sanjiv Khanna heard 45 cases on his first day after assuming charge as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). He thanked the lawyers and bar officials for their good wishes. CJI Khanna entered the Chief Justice’s courtroom at the Supreme Court in the afternoon after being administered the oath by President Draupadi Murmu in a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Supreme Court lawyers welcomed the CJI
He was given a grand welcome by senior advocates of the Bar, including former Attorney General and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi. “I wish you a successful tenure as Chief Justice,” senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said at the start of the day’s proceedings.
Other lawyers also offered their best wishes
Rohatgi said on Friday that after more than a decade and CJI YK Sabharwal (late), the Supreme Court will get its second Chief Justice from the Delhi High Court. Other lawyers present in the court room also congratulated the Chief Justice.
Hearing of cases in the afternoon
‘Thank you,’ the chief justice told lawyers gathered in court room number one along with Justice Sanjay Kumar in the afternoon. When a member once raised an issue related to the order of cases listed in a day for hearing, the Chief Justice said that it was on his notice and he would consider it.
Hearing of 45 cases
The Chief Justice remained in the courtroom till 2.30 pm and heard 45 listed cases, mostly commercial claims. On a petition filed by the West Bengal government against the arbitration award, the Chief Justice said, ‘Citizens will not be misled.’
These included major cases
A bench headed by the Chief Justice refused to hear the state government’s appeal against the arbitration award. In this, the state government was asked to pay the Mauritius-based company under promised tax incentives.
Earlier, Justice Khanna took oath in English ‘in the name of God’ at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna, born on May 14, 1960, will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a little over six months and will retire on May 13, 2025 after attaining the age of 65.
DY Chandrachud has retired from the post of CJI
Khanna replaced Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday. Besides Justice Chandrachud, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and former Chief Justice JS Khehar were present in the swearing-in ceremony.
