How much money can someone take into Parliament, what do the rules say? What happened when BJP leaders took Rs 1 crore?

There was a big uproar in the winter session of Parliament on Friday too. Earlier, MPs from opposition parties protested on the issue of Gautam Adani and the Constitution. Opposition MPs arrived wearing black masks. After this Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that a bundle of notes was found on a seat. The bundle was found by scavengers in seat number 222, which is allotted to Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. After this there was a huge uproar in the house. The chairman said that a fence costing Rs. 500 note and it was found to contain 100 note. He also said that it is not clear whether the note is genuine or fake.

The Congress says that the President should not disclose whose seat the money got. The Chairman should investigate the matter and get to the bottom of the matter. The Congress said that the chairman can get an inquiry by NIA or Delhi Police or any other agency at his convenience. Opposition leaders also alleged that the government had deliberately created a not story to divert attention from the Adani issue. At the same time, Leader of the House JP Nadda claimed that the opposition was showing seriousness on some issues, while trying to cover up others.

What did Abhishek Manu Singhvi say?

“I am surprised, I have never heard of this,” said senior lawyer and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. I went to the House at 12.57 pm on Thursday and the proceedings were adjourned at 1 pm. I then had lunch in the canteen with Ayodhya Rami Reddy (Member of the Rajya Sabha) and then left the Parliament House at 1.30 pm.” He said he was inside the House for three minutes and in the canteen for half an hour. The senior lawyer said that it is ridiculous to politicize such matters. Later, he posted on social media platform ‘X’ that whenever he goes to the House, he has only one Rs 500 note with him.

What are the rules?

There is no rule regarding this even though all the leaders create a ruckus after receiving the notes. Any MP can enter the House with any amount of money. There are also food shops and banks inside the Parliament House. Many leaders keep withdrawing money from this bank. In such a situation, it is not against the rules to carry notes inside Parliament. However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “Today is the digital age and no one carries so many notes. The matter should be looked into. Speaker Dhankhar also expressed surprise that no one had claimed the money. He said That he hopes someone will claim these notes, but no one has yet. “Does this reflect the state of the economy in which people can forget (bundles of notes)?”

When the BJP leaders threw the notes

The Manmohan Singh-led UPA government signed a nuclear deal with the US, and the left parties, upset by this, withdrew support from the UPA government. A confidence motion was moved in the House and on the same day three BJP MPs – Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagaura arrived in the Lok Sabha with Rs 1 crore. The trio threw currency notes inside the House and said that then Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh and Congress’s Ahmed Patel had offered them money to vote in support of the trust motion. Leader of Opposition LK Advani said that MPs were bribed to the tune of Rs 3 crore. One crore rupees was given earlier and the remaining amount was assured to be given later. However, Amar Singh and Ahmed Patel denied the allegations. The Delhi Police registered the case on the complaint of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.
