Landslides destroy 40 houses in Uganda, at least 15 dead

Nairobi: Landslides in six villages in eastern Uganda have killed at least 15 people and left 113 others missing. The police have given this information. According to the police, 15 injured people have been rescued and admitted to the hospital. The Uganda Red Cross Society said on Thursday that 13 bodies had been recovered after the landslide destroyed 40 houses. Rescue work is still going on.

The death toll may rise

Local media reported that officials feared the death toll could rise to 30. A landslide occurred in the hilly district of Bulambuli on Wednesday night following heavy rains. The district is about 280 kilometers east of the capital Kampala. The situation looks very dire.

A reporter in the area told The Associated Press that local officials have said heavy machinery will be brought in to help rescue efforts, but the roads are muddy and it’s still raining. The ‘Daily Monitor’ newspaper reported that most of the bodies found so far are of children. Meanwhile, two boats capsized during a rescue operation in River Nile after Pakwach Bridge collapsed on Wednesday. (AP)
