Srinagar, June 21: Police in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Friday arrested a man posing as a police official, recovering forged identity documents from his possession.
According to officials, the arrest took place at Harwan Crossing under the jurisdiction of Police Station Bomai. The suspect attempted to flee upon noticing a police patrol at the checkpoint but was swiftly apprehended.
During a personal search, police recovered a forged police identity card and a fake driving license from the accused. He has been identified as Barkat Ahmad War, son of Sanaullah War, a resident of Zaloora village in Sopore. Police said War is a driver by profession.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had forged the identity card in order to impersonate a police officer — likely to mislead the public or gain personal advantage by misusing the name of the police department.
A case FIR No. 32/2025 has been registered under Sections 205 and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Bomai. Further investigation is underway to ascertain his motive, any prior use of the forged ID, and whether he was part of a larger network.
Police have reiterated that impersonating law enforcement personnel is a serious criminal offence and anyone found guilty will face strict legal consequences. They have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior or fraudulent activity immediately.
