Mexican President Donald Trump’s Threat of 25% Import Tariffs Warns ‘Tariff Against Tariff’

The Mexican president said Mexico would impose its own tariffs to counter US tariffs.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum hinted at retaliation for President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed 25 percent import tariffs. Sheinbaum said US tariffs would be met with Mexican tariffs. “One tariff will be followed by another in response, and so on until we put normal businesses at risk,” Scheinbaum said.
Trump said Monday that his first action as president would be a 25 percent tax on all imports from Mexico and Canada in an effort to curb immigration and the flow of narcotics into the United States. “These tariffs will remain in effect until drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop invading our country!” Trump wrote on his Truth social page.
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily resolve this long-simmering problem. We hereby demand that they exercise that power,” Trump added, “and until they do, at great cost to them.” Time to pay!”
Sheinbaum said the plan would do nothing to stem the flow of migrants or drugs bound for the US border but would only cause inflation and job losses in both countries. “What’s the point there?” The president said he was willing to negotiate on the issue but drugs are a US problem, she said.
Mexico has done much to stem the flow of migrants, the president said, adding that Mexico suffers from the flow of weapons smuggled from the United States.
