A fierce encounter took place between the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) and Naxalites on Monday night in Kabinale village located in Karkala taluk of Udupi district of Karnataka. Notorious Naxalite leader Vikram Gowda was killed in this encounter. The encounter took place during an anti-Naxal search operation in Sitambalu area, when a gunfight broke out between the Naxalites and the ANF team. The ANF team intensified this operation after receiving information about the suspicious activities of Naxalite units.
Intruded into Yedagunda village
According to information, a Naxalite unit visited a remote house under the jurisdiction of Jayapura Police Station in Chikmagalur district. After this they also infiltrated Yedagunda village in Koppa taluk, where Naxalites discussed issues related to forest encroachment and Kasturirangan report. In view of these reports, the anti-Naxal campaign in the area was intensified.
How did the encounter begin?
On Monday night, a group of five Naxalites entered Kabinal village to buy groceries. As soon as he entered the village, he had an encounter with the ANF team. Naxalite leader Vikram Gowda was killed during the firing, while the remaining Naxalites managed to escape.
Who was Vikram Gowda?
Vikram Gowda’s name was prominent among Naxalite leaders active in Karnataka. He was involved in several violent incidents in the area. Following the success of ANF and police operations, Naxalite activities in the area are being closely monitored and search operations are underway. Following the encounter, the police have beefed up security in the area to rule out the possibility of other groups of Naxalites being active.
