Seoul: North Korea disrupted the flight of South Korean aircraft by tampering with GPS. The South Korean army has made this very serious accusation against North Korea. According to South Korea, this is a cyber attack by Kim Jong’s army. South Korea said a large number of flights and ship operations were affected as North Korea tampered with GPS signals from border areas for the second day in a row on Saturday.
Tensions between the two Koreas have risen as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un showcases his nuclear and missile programs and engages in electronic and psychological warfare. North Korea recently released thousands of balloons to drop debris and anti-South Korean propaganda leaflets over the neighboring country. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korean activity to tamper with GPS signals was detected on Friday and Saturday around the western border city of Kaesong and the nearby city of Haeju.
Dozens of planes were grounded
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North Korean activity disrupted dozens of civilian aircraft and several ships. The South Korean military, while warning planes and ships near western border areas, did not detail how North Korea was interfering with GPS signals or the extent of the interference. “We urge North Korea to immediately end its provocative actions related to GPS interference,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. We strongly warn that he will be held fully responsible for any consequences that may arise from this. (AP)
