NPP’s resounding victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections, now Disnayake will choose the new Prime Minister

Colombo: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s National People’s Power (NPP) has won a landslide victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections. So now the search for a new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has intensified. The work of appointing the new prime minister and cabinet of the country will be completed on Monday. The NPP achieved a record victory in the parliamentary elections on Friday. The NPP won a two-thirds majority in parliamentary elections on Friday and also established its dominance in the Jaffna constituency, the heartland of the country’s Tamil minority.

“We will appoint a cabinet on Monday, which may include 25 ministers, although the number may be less than 23 or 24 as per Article 46 of the Sri Lankan Constitution,” senior party spokesperson Tilwin Silva told reporters. Cabinet ministers are limited to 30. The total number of Deputy Ministers shall not exceed 40. Silva said the number of deputy ministers could be higher.

NPP will reduce costs for the public

“We may have to appoint additional deputy ministers to handle larger ministerial issues,” he said, adding that the NPP has always advocated a smaller government to cut costs for the public. Since the NPP won the presidential election in September, the country’s government was functioning with only three ministers, including the president. In the parliamentary elections held in the country, the NPP got 61 votes out of the total votes cast.
