In an important decision, the Odisha government has removed Minati Behra, Chairperson of the State Commission for Women (SCW). According to information, Minati Behra’s performance during her tenure was unsatisfactory. Although the state government had long ago notified Behra to remove him from the post, he did not vacate the chair. After this, the government issued a show cause notice to them and asked them to reply by November 1. After which the government termed their reply as “inadequate” and said it did not justify the commission’s unsatisfactory performance. “After a thorough and careful examination of the show cause reply submitted by the Chairman, OSCW, it is found that the reply is inadequate and does not justify the unsatisfactory performance of the Commission,” the government said in an official notification.
The government will soon appoint a new chairman
The issue has sparked a fresh controversy, with some even debating whether the move by the government is justified. It is expected that in the next few weeks, the Odisha government will appoint another chairperson to head the State Women’s Commission and ensure effective and timely redressal of women-related issues across the state.
Appointed in BJD Govt
In 2019, Behera was appointed as the president of Odisha SCW by the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government led by Naveen Patnaik. Before her appointment as Odisha SCW president, Behera was the BJD women’s wing chief. She also served as the Chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Persons with Disabilities from 2015 to 2018.
