Islamabad: Police authorities in Pakistan began closing key entry points to the national capital Islamabad on Saturday, a day ahead of a proposed protest by the party of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has given a ‘final call’ to the protests, urging his supporters to march towards Islamabad to demand the release of all PTI prisoners, including Imran Khan.
What did Imran say?
Imran Khan asked his supporters to recognize his alleged victory in the February 8 elections and demand the repeal of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. The 26th Constitutional Amendment changed the process of appointment of judges and the Chief Justice.
Quoted repair work
The National Motorways and Highways Authority has announced the closure of the M-1 and M-2 motorways as well as other major roads, citing repair work. M-1 and M-2, connecting Peshawar and Lahore to Islamabad, are important routes frequently used by protesters heading to the capital.
Islamabad Security
Strong security system
To strengthen security arrangements, the federal government of Pakistan has called in paramilitary Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel to assist the police in maintaining order in the capital. Taking extra security measures, the administration evacuated all the hostels in the city on Friday. The Punjab government has also imposed Section 144 across the province from November 23 to November 25, banning protests, public meetings, rallies and sit-ins. Similarly, Section 144 is applicable in Islamabad from November 18. (language)
