Srinagar, June 20: Criticizing the “concealment” of the subcommittee’s reservation report in strong terms, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and MLA from Pulwama, Waheed Ur Rehman Para, on Friday urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to table the report in the J&K Legislative Assembly, describing it as the House of the People.
He warned that if the report is not made public, “we will be left with no choice but to take this peaceful struggle for the rights of our youth to the streets across Jammu and Kashmir.” Para said that in a democratic setup, there is no space for secrecy, adding that democratic institutions derive their legitimacy from transparency and accountability.
In a post on X, Para said, “There is no room for secrecy in a democracy. Democratic institutions draw their legitimacy from transparency and accountability, not concealment.
“The government has no legal or moral ground to withhold the subcommittee’s report on the rationalisation of reservation. On the contrary, the RTI Act clearly mandates that public authorities must proactively disclose information. To this end, this report must be tabled in the legislative assembly, which is the House of the People of Jammu and Kashmir and not the fiefdom of any political party.” He added.
Speaking about the vitality of the report, Para further stated that “This is a report that affects the lives and futures of our youth, and they reserve the right to know what is being written in their fate by those who occupy places of power in their name.
“By hiding this report, the NC government is abdicating its responsibility and keeping the people of J&K, especially its youth, in the dark. If this deliberate evasion continues, we will be left with no choice but to take this peaceful struggle for the rights of our youth to the streets across Jammu and Kashmir.” Para concluded the post with a visible warning.
