Proposal to restore December 5 as holiday in memory of Sheikh Abdullah sent to LG office: Nasir Aslam Wani

Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani today said that the Council of Ministers has sent a formal proposal to Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, seeking reinstatement of December 5 as a public holiday. . A holiday in honor of the death anniversary of the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah.

The day was canceled as a holiday by the LG administration in recent years.

During a visit to Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah’s tomb at Hazratbal, Wani expressed optimism that the holiday would be restored by next year. “The proposal has already been submitted to the LG’s office and we hope that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will once again observe this important day,” he said.

Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the founder of the National Conference (NC), is remembered for his pivotal role in the political history of J&K.

Wani said Sheikh played an important role in liberating Jammu and Kashmir from autocratic rule, shaping its political identity and securing fundamental rights like freedom of speech for the people. Wani paid tribute to Sheikh acknowledging the lasting impact of his leadership and his transformative influence on the modern history of J&K. Meanwhile, NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah did not speak to the media at Sheikh’s mausoleum. They paid respect to Seth and left immediately.
