Shashi Ruia, co-founder of Essar Group, has passed away after prolonged illness. He was 81 years old.

Ruia, who co-founded metals-to-technology conglomerate Essar with his brother Ravi, died in Mumbai at around 23.55 hours on November 25, family sources said.

He had returned from the US about a month ago, where he was undergoing treatment.

Statement by Shashi Ruia’s family

A statement from the family on Tuesday said, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the demise of Mr. Shashikant Ruia, head of the Ruia and Essar family.

“With an unwavering commitment to community upliftment and philanthropy, he touched millions of lives and left a lasting impact. His humility, warmth and ability to connect with everyone he met made him a truly exceptional leader.”

“Ruiya’s extraordinary legacy will be a guiding light for all of us, as we honor his vision and continue to uphold the values he respected and championed,” the statement noted.

PM Modi condoled the demise of Shashi Ruia

Condoling Ruia’s demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was a giant in the industry. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence transformed India’s business landscape, he said, describing his demise as deeply saddened.

Modi said on X, “He has also set a high benchmark for innovation and growth. He was always full of ideas, always discussing how we could make our country better.”

His mortal remains will be kept at Raia House on Tuesday from 1 to 3 pm. The funeral procession will proceed from Ruia House to Hindu Worli Crematorium at 4 pm.

Shashi, a first-generation entrepreneurial businessman, began his career in 1965 under the guidance of his father, Nand Kishore Ruia.

He along with his brother Ravi founded Essar in 1969 by building the Outer Breakwater at Chennai Port. The group expanded into various sectors including steel, oil refining, exploration and production, telecom, power and construction.

He is survived by his wife Manju and two sons Prashant and Anshuman.
