Successful test of DRDO’s Pinaka rocket launcher, rockets fired at multiple targets simultaneously

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully completed testing of the Pinaka guided weapon system. The test was part of the Provisional Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQR) validation trial. Flight testing was conducted in three phases at various field firing ranges. A large number of rockets were tested during these tests. During this period, PSQR standards such as range, accuracy, stability, and salvo mode (a salvo is a simultaneous use of artillery or firing of guns that involves firing to engage a target) were evaluated as fire rates on multiple targets. Twelve (12) rockets from each production agency were tested from the two in-service Pinaka launchers upgraded by the launcher production agencies.

What is Pinaka Rocket Launcher?

The Pinaka rocket is equipped with a sophisticated guidance system, due to which it can identify the target and hit it accurately. It has been designed and developed by Pune-based DRDO Laboratory, Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory. The initial range of the Pinaka rocket was about 37 km, which has been increased to over 45 km. The Pinaka weapon system can launch multiple rockets simultaneously. Pinaka identifies a specific target and fires a rocket there.
