Texas backs Trump’s plan to deport immigrants; A big step taken

Houston: In support of US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to expel migrants from the country, Texas has offered to use 1,400 acres of state-owned farmland near the US-Mexico border. In a letter to Trump, Texas Land Commissioner Don Buckingham asked for help with federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He offered property in Starr County to be used as a place of detention and detention of ‘violent criminals’ before deportation.

But know

Buckingham criticized his predecessor for opposing the construction of a wall on farmland, alleging that the move fueled violence between criminal gangs and the exploitation of migrants. Texas last month acquired the land to boost border security efforts, including plans for a wall.

Trump has made his intentions clear

Trump has announced his intentions to declare a national emergency regarding immigration. The move has raised concerns among supporters about the humanitarian and logistical implications of evicting millions of people from the country. While Texas supported Trump’s immigration policies, anger is growing against the decision in other states. With Buckingham’s support, Los Angeles passed an ordinance to protect immigrants and limit local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. (language)
