Sri Lanka registered an embarrassing record: In all three formats of cricket, Tests are the one format where batsmen get the full opportunity to comfortably play long innings and it is rare that a team is reduced to a score of 100 or less. However, in the last few years, it has been observed that the teams in Test cricket are shrinking very fast, which was seen in the first match of the 2-match Test series between South Africa and Sri Lanka being played in Durban. In this match, the Sri Lankan team made their lowest score of 42 in the history of Test cricket and also registered an unwanted record in the last 100 years.
The Sri Lankan team collapsed after facing just 83 balls.
In the Durban Test, the Sri Lankan team was not only restricted to 42 runs in their first innings but could only face 83 balls i.e. 13.5 overs. This is the record for a team getting all out while facing the fewest balls in the history of Test cricket in the last 100 years. Earlier in 1924, South Africa were restricted to just 30 runs against England in the Edgbaston Test in which they faced 75 balls. If we talk about the first innings of Sri Lankan team’s Durban Test match, 9 players of their team could not even reach double figures.
Marco Jansson had no answer to the ball.
For South Africa, Marco Jensen’s bowling was instrumental in restricting Sri Lanka’s first innings to just 42, taking 7 wickets for 13 runs in just 6.5 overs. Apart from this, Gerald Coetzee 2 and Kagiso Rabada also managed to take one wicket. South Africa have now managed to take a lead of 149 runs in this match based on the first innings score, which will prove to be very important in deciding the outcome of this match. Both Sri Lanka and South Africa are also in the race to reach the final match of the World Test Championship.
