This decision of Trai will benefit crores of users, Jio, Airtel, BSNL, Vi will have to do this.

TRAI has issued new guidelines to all telecom operators Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, which will benefit crores of mobile users in the country. The regulator has asked telecom operators to upload information related to their network coverage on the website. This TRAI notification is part of the new Quality of Service (QoS) implementation from October 1, 2024. This decision of TRAI will help users to choose their telecom operator.

TRAI’S NEW GUIDELINES

In its guidelines, TRAI has directed telecom operators that every wireless access service provider has to publish a geospatial coverage map on its website to help users choose wireless voice and broadband services. Also, operators have to keep updating it from time to time. Although telecom operators publish network coverage maps on their websites, but as they are not updated from time to time, users cannot know exactly which area has good signal strength while choosing an operator.

Pay attention to the quality of service

The telecom regulator has said that network coverage is very important for the quality of service of telecom operators. No user can get good quality service in non-coverage area. In such a situation, it will be very important for telecom operators to publish service-wise geospatial coverage details on their websites. This TRAI guide is for all wireless service providers.

Currently, except for Airtel and Jio, all telecom operators provide 2G, 3G and 4G coverage to users. Jio and Airtel are providing 5G services to users. At the same time, BSNL is yet to launch 4G service commercially. As per TRAI guidelines, the network coverage map is required to mention whether there is 5G/4G/3G/2G coverage available. Operators can specify the location of their base station if they wish, but this is optional.

122 crore users benefited

TRAI has given a deadline of April 1, 2025 to comply with these guidelines. Along with specifying the network coverage area, telecom operators have also been asked to provide a user feedback button on their website so that users can give their feedback regarding network coverage. This guideline of TRAI can prove beneficial for 122 crore mobile users of the country.
