A routine Uber Eats delivery in New Jersey took an unexpected turn when a driver discovered her supposed food delivery was actually an ounce of marijuana disguised as a burrito.
The incident has prompted an investigation by Washington Township police.
An Uber Eats driver picked up the package in Lindenwold, Camden County, on Friday night, believing it contained a simple meal of a burrito, soup and a bottle of water.
However, as she headed towards Glassboro, she noticed a strong, foul smell coming from the bag. “She believed that something in her delivery package did not smell. She thought it smelled like marijuana,” said Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gursik, reported by 6abc.
Based on her suspicions, the driver pulled her over and contacted authorities.
Upon investigation, police discovered that the tin-foil-wrapped item was not food, but a large zip-lock bag of raw marijuana. “There was no meat, or lettuce or beans or rice. It was actually an ounce of marijuana,” Gursick explained, according to the New York Post.
Photos shared by the police showed crudely wrapped drugs that looked like food. Investigators suspect the criminals may have used Uber’s package delivery facility, which is strictly prohibited from transporting illegal substances, alcohol or drugs.
An Uber spokesperson called the incident “very disturbing” and commended the driver for contacting local authorities, urging other drivers to report any suspicious deliveries. Washington Township police have since taken the drugs into evidence and launched an investigation to find their origin.
This is not the first time such an incident has happened. Over the summer, another Uber driver was reported to have been asked to deliver fraudulent gift cards, indicating a trend of abusing delivery services for illegal purposes. Authorities have not yet filed charges in the case but are advising users of delivery services to be vigilant.
