Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on the occasion of National Press Day on Saturday expressed concern over the financial stress of digital and traditional media. The Union Minister said that fair compensation to news publishers for their content is the biggest challenge facing the media today.
Financial losses are occurring
Vaishnav said that today most of the news is received through digital media. So traditional media (radio, TV, newspapers, magazines) are suffering financial loss. Vaishnav said traditional media needs to be compensated fairly for the content they create.
The matter came before the government
News publishers (both traditional and digital) have repeatedly raised concerns with the Indian government about the imbalance in bargaining between big tech companies and news publishers.
People flock to digital media
The Union Minister said that we see that news consumption is rapidly changing from traditional media to digital media. Due to which the traditional media is suffering financial loss due to this change.
This needs attention
Investments in building a team of journalists, training them, creating editorial processes, ways of verifying the authenticity of news and taking responsibility for content are all investments that are huge, both in terms of time and money. They are becoming irrelevant. This needs attention.
A fair compensation is required
Along with this, the minister said that efforts to create news content through traditional media need to be given due compensation. The Union Minister said that the challenge of fair compensation is affecting our media and news world. This needs to change. It should be noted.
