New Delhi: DY Chandrachud retired as the Chief Justice of the country on Sunday. Justice Sanjeev Khanna has replaced him. Justice Sanjiv Khanna today took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of the country. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office and secrecy to him at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
What can’t DY Chandrachud do after retirement?
DY Chandrachud cannot practice law anywhere in the country due to Article 124(7) of the Constitution. That is, after retirement from the Supreme Court, the CJI or judges cannot take up the profession of lawyer. It can play other roles though.
Legal experts say that such a provision has been made to maintain the sanctity and impartiality of the judiciary. There is no possibility of bias due to this. In fact, one thing emerges from this is that if the former CJI of the country becomes a lawyer, the dignity of his former post will be undermined.
What can be done after retirement?
- Can enter public service.
- Can be a governor or a member of government committees.
- Can mediate disputes.
- Can become a member of Indian Arbitration Council.
- May head commissions and tribunals such as the National Human Rights Commission.
- Can teach in law schools. Can lecture and write on legal issues.
