The Hague: The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Hamas officials. It charges him with war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the war in Gaza and the October 2023 attack. Israel’s attack on the Palestinian territories began after the October 2023 attack on Israel. Several Hamas officials have been killed in the conflict.
What will be the effect?
The ICC’s decision has made Netanyahu and others internationally wanted suspects. The move by the International Criminal Court is expected to complicate efforts to negotiate a ceasefire to end the 13-month conflict. However, its practical implications may be limited because Israel and its key ally the US are not members of the ICC.
What did America say?
Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have condemned ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s request for a warrant, calling it outrageous and anti-Semitic. US President Joe Biden also condemned the prosecution and supported Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas. Meanwhile, let us also mention here that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has crossed 44,000 during the 13-month war between Israel and Hamas.
