DoT has once again taken a major step to stop fake calls. Department of Telecom has blocked 1.77 crore mobile numbers. Fake calls were made through these mobile numbers. DoT and TRAI have geared up to free over 122 crore telecom users in the country from fake telemarketing calls. TRAI last month implemented a new policy for fake calls and messages, with provisions to block marketing and fake calls at the operator level without whitelisting.
1.53 crore fake calls are being blocked every day
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), sharing information from its official X handle, said that 1.35 crore fake calls are blocked every day. At the same time, 1.77 crore mobile numbers from making fake telemarketing calls have been blocked. 14 to 15 lakh mobile phones used in making fake calls have also been traced. The Department of Telecommunication said that understanding the problems of users, 1.35 crore fake calls have been blocked every day in the last 5 days. It means that the government has blocked about 7 crore calls.
Apart from this, the Department of Telecommunication has taken massive action and blocked 1.77 crore mobile numbers used for financial fraud. Not only this, the telecom department has also blocked 14 to 15 lakh stolen mobile numbers. DoT said this is just the beginning. Technology has brought many benefits in our life but many people are misusing it. This is the reason why a regulatory system has been introduced for the technology.
Millions of mobile numbers have been blocked earlier too
DoT has already done the job of blocking crores of SIM cards before. The Department of Telecommunication has changed the rules to prevent fake calls from people’s mobiles. Now users will only receive whitelisted telemarketing calls. Also, if the message contains a URL or APK link, it will be blocked at the network level. However, if the messages are whitelisted, they will not be treated as fake calls.
