One person has died in a shooting at Tuskegee University in the state of Alabama, USA. 16 people are said to have been injured in this incident. According to officials, 12 of the injured were shot. The incident took place at a place on the university campus, where students and others were present. The police are investigating the matter and efforts are being made to find out the cause of the incident. Due to this shooting there is tension in the university and surrounding areas.
Death of 18-year-old youth
The shooter has been arrested. Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, was taken into custody after he left the scene of the shooting on campus and was found with a handgun with an attached machine gun, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. Myrick faces federal charges of possessing a machine gun, the agency said in a statement. Officials said the 18-year-old man who died was not a university student, but several students were among the injured.
Classes canceled today
Tuskegee University announced that classes are canceled today. The university said in a statement that the victim’s parents have been notified. Many of the injured are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery. Macon County Coroner Hal Bentley told The Associated Press on Sunday that an autopsy is planned for the 18-year-old at the State Forensic Center in Montgomery.
A student is also among the injured
Tuskegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis said the injured included a female student who was shot in the abdomen and a male student who was shot in the arm. City police were responding to an unrelated double shooting off campus when officers received a call about a shooting at the university’s campus apartments in West Commons, Mardis said.
