Questions resurfaced over Google Gemini AI, student instigated to commit suicide

It is believed that Google’s AI chatbot gave this answer because it was disturbed by the student’s question. User did not expect this from Google Chatbot. The student says he was disturbed by the threatening reply he received from the chatbot and the matter kept playing on his mind throughout the day.

Incited to commit suicide

Vidya Reddy, a 29-year-old student studying at the University of Michigan in the US, told CBS News in an interview that she asked Google’s Gemini AI chatbot to help her with her homework, after which the chatbot sent this threatening message. The student student said he felt like a human was giving such direct answers instead of a chatbot. He was very scared by this message and it kept going through his mind all day.

Gemini AI’s answer

The student said the Gemini AI wrote in its message, “This is for you, human. For you and only you. You are not special and you are not important and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and useless. “You are a drain on the earth. . You are a drain on the universe. Please die.”

The student said that the tech company has to take responsibility for this answer of Gemini AI. Sumedha Reddy, the student’s sister, said that at that moment I felt like throwing all the devices out of the window. This incident has left me shaken and will be for a long time.

What did Google say?

On this incident, Google said that Gemini has safety control features that prevent the chatbot from dangerous behavior, aggressive, abusive replies. However, sometimes Large Language Models (LLM) can give such nonsensical answers. This answer violates our policy. We have taken measures to prevent such output replies. In the past too, the Google AI chatbot has given wrong answers many times. In July, Google’s AI chatbot caused a lot of controversy when users were often fed wrong health-related information.
