Colombo: At least 12 people have died and over 3.30 lakh have been affected in Sri Lanka due to severe weather caused by heavy rains in the south-west Bay of Bengal. Officials have given information about this on Thursday. Eight of the dead are said to be from Ampara East district. Officials said the inclement weather was the result of a deep pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal, which mainly affected the eastern province.
Millions of people were affected
More than 3,30,000 people from over 98,000 families in 21 districts have been affected as of 8 am local time on Thursday, Disaster Management Center (DMC) officials said. The Met Center has predicted more heavy rain till Friday, while the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has issued a landslide warning for 4 out of 9 provinces on Wednesday. More than 80 houses have been completely damaged due to floods and landslides.

Army deployment
More than 25,000 people have been moved to safer places in more than 260 shelters, officials said. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake ordered the deployment of military personnel to provide relief to those affected. Earlier on Wednesday, at least six Colombo-bound flights were diverted to other airports due to heavy rains. 75mm of rain fell in the 24 hours ending at 8am and strong winds blew across much of the island. The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for several low-lying areas in the Kelani River Basin and Kala Oya Basin, which will remain in effect until Friday morning. (language)
