Russia Nuclear Theory: Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new nuclear policy on Tuesday. The new policy announced that if any nuclear-backed country attacked Russia, it would be considered a joint attack on their country. Putin endorsed the new policy on nuclear deterrence on February 24, 2022, the 1,000th day since the invasion of Ukraine by sending troops.
Russia’s tough stance
In this change, Russia has included conventional missile attacks as well as attacks by drones or other aircraft. According to the change in nuclear doctrine, if such an attack on Russia is carried out by any member state of the alliance, Moscow will consider the attack as an attack on behalf of the entire alliance. This means that if American weapons are used against Russia, Russia will hold the entire NATO alliance responsible for it.
Why did Russia take this step?
Russia has been angered by Ukraine’s permission to use long-range American missiles. The move by Russia follows US President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to attack targets inside Russia with US-supplied long-range missiles. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the US decision would increase tensions. “If such a decision is indeed made and communicated to the Kiev regime, it will certainly lead to a new round of escalation of tensions,” Peskov said, according to Russia’s state news agency Tass.
Zelensky said this
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in an address to the nation on Sunday that there would be no warning about the attack. He said, “War is not fought with words. Such things are not declared, rockets will speak.” It is also worth noting that any major air strike on Russia could trigger a nuclear response. In such a situation, the signing of this policy would indicate Putin’s intention to use Russia’s nuclear arsenal to force the West to back down. (language)
