Google may have to sell its Chrome web browser. The company has been found guilty of violating anti-trust rules, which could lead to major prosecution. The US Department of Justice may press Google’s parent company Alphabet to sell the Chrome web browser. However, the matter is still pending in court. According to a Bloomberg report, Alphabet may be asked to separate its Chrome web browser and Android operating system businesses. After this Google can make its web browser stand alone.
What is the matter?
In fact, the pressure on Google may be due to the decision taken in August regarding violation of anti-trust rules. If the Department of Justice forces a judge to take action against Google in court, it could bring a larger action against the tech company. In its decision in August, the court said that Google had taken unfair advantage of its monopoly in the search and advertising markets, proving that the company is a monopolist and has worked to maintain its monopoly.
Google’s monopoly
Currently, apart from Android mobile operating system, Google has services like Google Chrome browser and AI Gemini. The company shows targeted ads to users using its Google search algorithm. Talking about Google Chrome browser, it has 65 percent share. After this Apple Safari has 21 percent market share. Other browsers, including Firefox, have a much smaller share. Android operating system is the main reason for the increasing share of Google Chrome. Most of the world’s users use smartphones with the Android operating system, with Google Chrome as the default browser.
The court’s decision will shock Google
According to the report, the court may order Google to divest its Android OS, Google Play Mobile and other services. Currently, in all Android smartphones, users have to sign in with their Google account. Only after this they will be able to download any app through Google Play Store. Once you’re logged in to your Google account, you’ll automatically be logged in to all Google services available on your phone. Taking advantage of this, Google has monopolized its advertising business.
