The central government termed the Global Hunger Report as wrong, saying it does not reflect the actual situation of the country.

Recently, India was ranked 105 in the Global Hunger Report-2024 index. Now the central government has given its answer in the Lok Sabha. The government said the hunger measurement used in the Global Hunger Report-2024 index is “flawed” and does not reflect the actual situation in India. The government emphasized that it is making serious efforts to address the issue of malnutrition.

India was ranked 105th

India has been ranked 105 out of 127 countries in a study released by Concern Worldwide, Welt Hunger Help and the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict.

These elements cannot be indexed

Junior Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhnia said, “The Global Hunger Index is a flawed measure of ‘hunger’ and does not reflect the real situation in India. Three of the four component indicators (stunting, wasting) and child mortality ) are related to children’s health and cannot be taken to reflect hunger in the population.”

An improvement over 2023

“India’s ranking has improved in 2024 compared to 2023, mainly due to improvement in the fourth component indicator of the index, namely Prevalence of Undernutrition (POU),” he said. In last year’s Global Hunger Report, India was ranked 111 out of 125 countries.

Addressing the challenges of malnutrition

“Anganwadi services and supplementary nutrition program efforts under Poshan Abhiyan have been revamped and integrated as ‘Saksam Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0’,” the minister said. “It aims to address through strategic changes in nutrition content and delivery to children, adolescents, pregnant women and lactating mothers as well as methods to promote health, well-being and immunity,” he said to develop and promote the ecosystem.
