Colombo: The National People’s Power Party (NPP) led by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake has won an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary elections. Earlier, the NPP had secured 70 percent of the votes, according to preliminary results announced by 11 pm local time. The main opposition party Samagi Jan Balavegaya (SJB) and the National Democratic Front (NDF) backed by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe got 11 and five percent of the vote respectively. The NPP won a decisive victory in Galle, the capital of Southern Province, with over 70 percent of the vote.
65 percent voting was done
Sri Lanka has a population of 21 million and over 17 million voters. Parliamentary elections are held for a term of five years. Around 65 percent voting took place in Sri Lanka on Thursday and now the results are in. The Sri Lankan Parliament has 225 seats and 113 seats are required for a majority. The presidential election was held here two months ago in September.
