Was there a train bombing conspiracy hatched in 1953?
An attempt on Nehru’s life was also allegedly made in 1953 but the conspirators did not succeed. According to reports of the time, some people then hatched a conspiracy to blow up the Bombay-Amritsar Express in which Nehru was travelling. However, the plot failed when the police nabbed two people sitting near the railway tracks in Kalyan. It was later revealed that what was believed to be a bomb was actually some ‘firecrackers’ and the attackers intended to create a sensation with the explosion of firecrackers. Apart from this, in 1961, a conspiracy was hatched to blow up the track.
There were knife attacks in 1955 and stone attacks in 1956.
In 1955, a rickshaw puller attacked Nehru with a knife with the intention of killing him. According to newspaper reports at the time, a 6-inch knife was recovered from the 32-year-old rickshaw puller. The attacker jumped on Nehru’s car but Nehru pushed him back in time. At the same time, in 1956, the police said that a plot to assassinate Nehru in Mumbai had been foiled. Police said hundreds of people in the crowd had planned to pelt Nehru with stones while he was delivering a speech from the dais. Police also arrested hundreds of people in this case.
